The Story!

Cases of kidnapping in Lagos exaggerated — AG
Mr Ade Ipaye, Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, on Thursday said the cases of kidnapping in the state were being exaggerated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ipaye made this known while briefing newsmen in Ikeja.
He advised the residents of the state not to panic but to be security conscious at all times.
Ipaye said: “From investigations conducted thus far, it is clear that the problem is considerably exaggerated.
“There is a need for caution but no cause for alarm. Let us all be security conscious and make sure that we know the people that are around us all the time.
“These include our drivers, maids, cooks and even relatives. Most of the cases so far investigated were instigated by someone well known to the victim.”
The attorney-general also advised relatives of kidnapped victims to report promptly to the Police, instead of paying ransom to the kidnappers.
“If we quickly pay ransom to kidnappers, we will be encouraging the crime and at the same time funding the acquisition of firearms, drugs and other such things.
“I want to assure the public that Lagos State is one place where kidnappers are actually being arrested.
“We are giving the Police and all other security agencies full support and this is yielding results.
“The first set of persons accused of kidnapping will be charged to court on May 16 and I will be there personally to lead the prosecution team,” he said.
Ipaye, however, said he had not got an update from the Police, on the recent kidnap and release of Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area.
The attorney-general said that the justice ministry was collaborating with the Police to improve the quality of their investigations.
“The first set of 45 police investigators have been trained. Another set will soon be trained because we want to make this process continuous.
“It is very important because it will assist our prosecution of cases in court,” Ipaye added.
